Associates

JDSA is committed to our clients and equally to our employees. To achieve these goals, JDSA stresses a high quality of life and encourages our attorneys, and staff, to take advantage of all that the surrounding environment has to offer. The attorneys share a common firm culture that emphasizes the goals of practicing law at challenging levels in a collegial atmosphere.

Summer Associates

JDSA's summer associate program is one of the most important elements in the firm's recruiting program. A significant portion of our associate hiring each year stems from the summer associates of previous years. We make every effort to give our summer associates a rounded view of the practice of law. Summer associate assignments are designed to provide a variety of substantive work and the broadest possible exposure to our attorneys.

Sabbatical

All shareholders are eligible to take six consecutive months of paid sabbatical after their 10th full year of employment with the firm. Each shareholder is also allowed an additional six-month sabbatical approximately every five years thereafter.

One of the major benefits of the firm's generous sabbatical program is that it is required that the participating partners take their full six months away from the office, necessitating transfer of their files to other attorneys in the firm. This gives our clients exposure to other lawyers who know and understand their business and needs, and creates immediate responsibility, client contact, and courtroom experience for our younger lawyers.

An additional benefit is that when the partner returns from sabbatical, it provides an opportunity for ongoing representation and direct contact with the clients, and their files, that the younger attorney handled during the partner's absence.

JDSA's attorneys not only work extremely hard on behalf of our clients, but we play hard as well. Thanks to our sabbatical program, many of our partners have experienced multiple once-in-a-lifetime adventures, generally reserved for retirement. Every one of our partners who has gone on sabbatical has traveled extensively with their families and come back refreshed and invigorated, with a renewed outlook, thus better serving their clients and the firm.

Benefits

JDSA offers a solid benefits package to our employees. A few of the key benefits include:

Health Insurance: The firm offers enrollment in both medical and dental insurance, as well as enrollment in a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) with contributions made by the firm. Also included is long term disability insurance, AD&D and life insurance. The firm also offers enrollment in a Flexible Spending Plan (FSA) for both medical and dependent care reimbursement.

401(k) Retirement Plan: The firm's 401(k) plan allows employees to make pre-tax salary contributions to the maximum amount allowed by law each year, on the first enrollment date following 6 months of employment. Federal income taxes on these salary contributions are deferred. Each individual personally directs the investment of contributions through the Plan's investment options.

Profit Sharing: The firm makes a profit-sharing contribution of 3% of an employee's gross annual salary each pay period, once eligible. At the end of the year, the firm may also contribute additional profit sharing funds based on firm performance.

Time Off: JDSA believes that attorneys have accumulated sufficient experience and responsibility to determine the time and attention required to attend to the needs of our clients. Therefore, JDSA provides its attorneys with ultimate flexibility to take paid vacations and sick leave, at, and for such time, as the attorney determines.

Partnership Track: Associates become eligible for partnership after four years. After the first year of partnership has been completed, shareholders obtain additional perquisites, including disability insurance, the sabbatical program (as outlined below) and others.

Mentoring

The firm has an active Mentor program. Mentors orient the Associate to the Firm and the legal profession, provide support, and act as coach and advocate. The Mentor helps the Associate develop and use good judgment, insight and common sense. The Mentor may or may not have the responsibility to delegate work, but can assist with maintaining quality control, suggest and approve educational opportunities, provide training on efficiency, client relations and file management; and evaluate the Associate’s work product and general lawyering abilities.

What the Associate Can Expect

  • A mentor who will answer their questions regarding both lawyer and non-lawyer issues.
  • A weekly meeting schedule to ensure consistent communication with your mentor.
  • Feedback regarding your work, time management and delegation.
  • Suggestions from your mentor for improvement and learning opportunities.
  • Assistance from your mentor with your integration into the firm during the early months.
