I like helping people…Washington courts are underfunded. Depending on the county and month, eighty to ninety percent of the cases in our courts are criminal and domestic. That leaves a small window for these types of cases that would end up in civil litigation to be heard.
— J. Patrick Aylward

Legal mediation, a form of alternative dispute resolution, uses a neutral third-party to help litigants come to an understanding and facilitate negotiations between the parties. Mediation saves time and expense in further litigation by settling a lawsuit early in the dispute.

The Northwest Institute for Dispute Resolution, established by the University of Idaho College of Law in 1997, creates a training resource for the growing demand in high-quality dispute resolution.
